Espoo, Finland, March 2023. Research points out that microorganisms play a role in many aspects of human health. Consequently, more and more people search for available options to explore their gut microbiome composition. To address this need, we are combining our software engineering experience with ViennaLab’s expertise in development of intuitive and user-friendly assays to create a 16S rRNA gene-based test using NGS technology. This all-in-one-solution is a rapid and straightforward way to assess the diversity of the human gut microbiome – down to species level classification – and provides statistical analyses, informative summary tables, and other graphical outputs summarized in a concise report.

According to Jukka Matilainen, Chief Software Architect of Euformatics, “This is an exciting period of microbiome research, and we are pleased to contribute to the development of a solution that can help people better understand how their body works. However, classifying microorganisms is difficult, so we built a solution that could be flexible and evolve as our knowledge on the field increases.”

Adrian Stütz, Senior Scientist at ViennaLab, comments on the solution, “We identified a need in the market for fast and accurate species level classification of the human gut microbiome, so we welcomed this joint solution. Together, we offer a reliable NGS library prep chemistry together with a fast and easy protocol, as well as a powerful bioinformatic solution with an intuitive web user interface. This allows customers to leave the details to us so that they can concentrate on the results that matter to them. This has been, and remains our first priority to develop a reliable and efficient all-in-one solution for our customers.”

About Microbiome research:

Microbes are present on almost every surface of the human body. A new era in microbiology research started in the early 2000s with the development of high-throughput sequencing of microbiomes. This technology allowed drastic improvements in our understanding of the role microbes play in human biology and disease, and scientists have found evidence that the human gut microbial community may lead to allergies, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, or even mental disorders (Annu Rev Med 2022; 73:439-453). The emerging literature points towards the importance of microbes for the host’s nutrient uptake, protection against diseases or pathogens as well as for maintaining a healthy metabolic balance.

Despite all the knowledge gathered by scientists over the years, there is still an absence of consensus on what a healthy microbiome is, and how specific diets interact with an individual’s gut microbiome. On the bright side, some answers have already been found, and there is clear evidence that a diverse community of microorganisms can be linked to a healthy gut microbiome (Aging 2019; 11:289-290). Until the scientific community reaches a better understanding of our complex gut bacterial communities, microbiome research continues to be fast-evolving and challenging.

Pushing the boundaries of innovation is part of our aim at Euformatics. Therefore, we found ViennaLab as the perfect partner to work together in order to offer a reliable and intuitive all-in-one-solution for gut microbiome analysis.
